Coaches

Our coaches are the heart of our speed skating club, driving our commitment to excellence and fostering a love for the sport. Through their dedication and expertise, they inspire and develop our athletes to reach their full potential on and off the ice.

Advanced (A Group) Lead Coach and Coaching Coordinator

For as long as I can remember, I have been a speed skater, racing around the track myself or teaching others to do the same.  I was lucky enough to have my parents sign me up for this sport back in 2003, at the age of 5, and have been involved with the club ever since.

My time as a skater for the club wasn’t marked by any particularly great achievements but by many great memories, friendships and challenges that taught me important life lessons. Lessons about showing up for yourself, and for others. Lessons about how to handle winning and losing in life and lessons about leadership. I feel strongly that my time as a skater with FASSCI played a significant role in the person I am today.

By the time I was 14, I was helping coach our Learn To Skate program, and from there, my passion for coaching only grew. Ultimately, when I retired from skating, coaching was a way for me to stay involved in the sport I loved so much, and a way for me to give back to the club that gave so much to me. My goal is to provide a similar experience for our current skaters, providing opportunities to push themselves further than they thought possible and to grow not only as a skater but as a person.

When I’m not on ice, I enjoy exploring the outdoors, cooking a hearty meal and filming, which I do full time for my company, Dark Fire Films.

Steve Harris

Learn to Speed Skate (C Group) Coach

My experience with FASSCI began around 1996 when my son entered the Learn to Skate program. I got involved on the ice assisting the coach about 4 years later and have been helping out ever since. This will be my seventh consecutive season coaching the club’s younger athletes.

My athletic background is as a soccer player, runner and more recently cyclist, although I skated Master’s short track and long track for several years. I wasn’t particularly proficient, but had a lot of fun!

I’ve stayed involved with speed skating because it’s such a great sport. It’s a true combination of technique, fitness and tactics. Skaters who put the work in will see the rewards, although not always in a linear fashion. Speed skating has its ups and downs (literally). It’s also rewarding to see New Brunswick skaters excelling on the national and international stage and knowing that you are a part of that community.

My academic background is in athlete and sport development, having gained a Master’s in Physical Education from UNB. I put this to good use in helping Speed Skate Canada revamp its competition system. Some of the changes included moving to East and West Youth Championships, changing the distances raced and introducing the 7m radius track for younger athletes.

Ultimately, my goal is that all skaters who step on the ice for practice have fun, improve their skating, develop confidence in themselves and improve their physical fitness.
